NovaKnowledge conducted a survey last fall on health and wellness in Nova Scotia in which Boyne Clarke participated.
We have been included in their full report (page 43), which is available as a download from their site at:

NovaKnowledge was pleased to report that their Report Card, entitled Health, Safety, & Prosperity - Nova Scotia's 21st-Century Challenge, launched Wednesday, June 16th, in Halifax.
The Boyne Clarke write-up reads:
At Boyne Clarke, a safe and healthy workplace is important to everyone. An active Health & Wellness Committee takes the lead, meeting monthly, to assess health and safety issues and promote wellness. As a result, the law firm has been recognized as a "Healthy Business" by the Halifax Chamber of Commerce in both 2008 and 2009.
The firm provides multiple health benefits including:
- a confidential, online health assessment survey with follow-up report and target goals for each employee;
- a yearly $250 employee wellness subsidy;
- lunch-hour access to a fitness trainer and gym memberships; and
- the opportunity to make Weight Watchers' membership payroll deductions.
Employees are encouraged to update first aid and CPR training annually, and a defibrillator
unit and training for staff were recently provided.
HEALTH, SAFETY and PROSPERITY - A novaknowledge Report Card
Annual safety inspections conducted firm-wide, a Healthy Workplace Bulletin Board, and monthly lunch-time training sessions are the norm. Boyne Clarke acts promptly when built environment or individual ergonomic issues arise; strives to limit staff risk on roads in severe weather by providing up-to-the-minute office closure updates by telephone; and offers paid time for staff to pursue volunteer opportunities.
More recently, Boyne Clarke's Health & Wellness Committee organized contests, challenges, and prizes during Canada's Healthy Workplace Month in October 2008 and 2009. They also added an environmental challenge in conjunction with Environment Week in 2009.
As a result of the Health & Wellness Committee's vigilance, employee education, and strong support from the firm, the last reported injury occurred in 2003. But an indicator of equal importance might be the spirit that runs high among the 127 staff, who achieved Top Corporate Fundraiser in the Manulife Dragon Boat Festival in each of the last three years, along with many other significant contributions to local charities.
