Born in Montreal, Quebec, Tom received his Bachelor of Arts in 1968 and LL.B. in 1971, both from Dalhousie University. He was admitted to the Nova Scotia Barristers' Society in 1971 and was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1988.

Tom is a Partner and practices in the areas of Commercial Real Estate Development, Business Law, and Bankruptcy & Insolvency. Practicing law for nearly 40 years, Tom was a Founding Partner of Boyne, Crocker & Jones when the firm began in 1972 and during that period has served the firm in numerous capacities including Managing Partner and as a member and chair of various committees.  Tom currently serves on the firm's Articling Committee.

Active in the affairs of the Nova Scotia Barristers' Society, Tom has sat on Bar Council and committees of the Bar Society, acted as a Claims Review Officer for the Nova Scotia Barrister Society Liability Claims Fund and currently is a member of the Discipline Hearing Committee. Tom has also been active with a number of community boards and charitable organizations.

Tom has been recognized by his peers and is regularly included in Best Lawyers in Canada and Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory.
